Yoga Therapy for Low Back Pain


It is estimated 60-80% of the population suffer from low back pain at some point in their lifetime, making it a common reason why students turn to Yoga for help. With its holistic approach, Yoga has enormous potential in both treatment and prevention of low back pain. It considers the student on all levels: physical, mental and emotional .

 Dr Rob Lamport, chiropractor and advocate of healing the body without surgery, and Saraswathi Vasudevan, yoga therapist trained in the tradition of Sri T Krishnamacharya & Sri TKV Desikachar, will together explore this condition and offer valuable perspectives for preventive care and healing from both a modern, western perspective and traditional Yoga.

This workshop is for yoga teachers, therapists, and anyone interested in better understanding low back pain to better help themselves or their students. Please note that this workshop is not designed for addressing individual cases of back pain for which you will need to contact us for a personal appointment.

OVERVIEW

Part 1 (December 07, 2021)

Session 1: The Yoga Therapy Approach to Low back Pain - Saraswathi Saraswathi will present an overview of the therapeutic approach for personalised yoga therapy, drawing reference from the Yoga Sutras and other relevant texts. You will learn how to apply this traditional wisdom to understanding low back pain:, how it can manifest, and how to approach it.

Session 2: Basic Anatomy of the Lumbar Spine and Pelvis - Dr Rob Dr. Rob will provide an overview of the anatomy of the lumbar spine, pelvis and sacrum. We will look at key bones, their features, ligaments, and the intervertebral disc.

Part 2 (December 10, 2021) 

Session 1: Preventive care for the back through Yoga - Saraswathi When you understand how the back is impacted at the gross and subtle levels, you can learn to build a strong, flexible, balanced spine, with better movement of breath and wellbeing. Finding ways to stabilise oneself from within.

Session 2: Stabilisation of the Lumbar Spine - Dr Rob We will explore how the lumbar spine and pelvis are stabilised by connective and muscle tissues. How a lack of stability can lead to low back issues and how these can be addressed.

Part 3 (December 14, 2021)

Session 1: Therapeutic Movement - The Mechanical Approach - Dr Rob Medical research in recent years has helped inform us how movement influences spinal tissues. What can we learn from this, and can modern therapeutic techniques be utilised by the yoga therapist?

Session 2: Exploring breathing, Asana modifications for taking care of minor back issues - Saraswathi Using simple, key asanas & their modification with conscious breathing to address minor low back issues and progression with practice to prevent future issues.

Part 4: (December 17, 2021)

Session 1: Conditions - Dr Rob Looking at some of the most common low back issues from both a medical and chiropractic perspective.

•Spinal Stenosis
•Sciatica
•SIJ dysfunction

Dr Rob will give a background of each condition and their therapeutic considerations.

Session 2: Individual and condition specific approach - Saraswathi Specific techniques for yoga therapists to address specific low back pain issues. Paying close attention to individual variation and ensuring a holistic approach is followed. Some basic guidelines on building the progression in practice.

Facilitators

Saraswathi Vasudevan is a yoga teacher, trainer and therapist in the tradition of Sri T Krishnamacharya. She has close to three decades of study, practice and teaching experience in this tradition, having studied directly with Sri TKV Desikachar for over 17 years and other senior teachers in this tradition. She is the co-founder of YogaVahini, a Specialised Yoga Training, Therapy and Research Centre that has centres in Chennai & Hyderabad and presence in other cities in India and around the world. Saraswathi currently serves on the Voluntary Board of Directors of Yoga Alliance, the largest international yoga certifying and credentialing body.

Dr. Robert Lamport specialises in the Gonstead method of Chiropractic, a precise approach to correcting problems of the spine and joints. He was awarded a Master’s degree in Chiropractic from the Anglo European College of Chiropractic in the United Kingdom. He is the founder of More Than Anatomy, an online education platform for yoga teachers, which aims to help them better understand the human body in both health and disease. Having first developed a strong interest in health in 1992, he has been practicing yoga for the past 25 years and for the last 10 under the guidance of Sri O P Tiwariji.
